Brittany Michaelsen-Mulkey, a Texas southern belle, is an “expressive impeccable operatic soprano” (DC Metro Theatre Arts) who most recently was announced as a finalist in the 2018-2019 American Prize Competition. Also recently in January and February of 2019, Brittany experienced a role debut and a company debut – In February, she made her company debut with Capitol Opera Richmond as Mimi in their production of La Bohème, and in January, she made her role debut as First Lady in the El Paso Opera’s production of Die Zauberflöte. She was honored to be welcomed back the El Paso stage this year, as she was once a part of their Young Artist Program for the 2017-2018 season.
In addition to her most recent operatic successes, Brittany was also the 1st place winner in the Virginia State National Association of Teachers of Singing competition (NATS), soon followed by another 1st place in the NATS Mid-Atlantic Regional competition qualifying her for the National rounds where she placed among the top 13 in the nation.
No stranger to the stage, Brittany has delighted audiences in the Central and West Texas areas, the NOVA/DC area, and even in Italy. Recent roles include: Mimi in La Bohème, First Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Phyllis in Iolanthe, Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, the title role in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, and sizable scenes as Violetta in La Traviata and Gilda in Rigoletto. She has also had the honor of singing for various experts in the field such as Ann Murray, Vincenzo De Vivo, Laura Claycomb, and Edward Crafts.
Brittany obtained her Master’s degree with summa cum laude honors in Vocal Performance from George Mason University under the guidance of Professor Patricia Miller, and is a proud graduate of Texas State University where she received her Bachelor’s degree from the highly-acclaimed Music Education program.
